UPS or Uninterrupted Power Supply is a special kind of power supply system. These include secondary transmitting cells or batteries that can store electrical energy. As a result, if the power supply is suddenly cut off, the power contained in it can supply power to the computer or to the necessary devices.
UPS is usually capable of providing backup power within 0.1 seconds of switching time. As a result, the user does not have to reset or restart the computer or electronics device even if the power goes out. The backup power due to UPS does not cause any damage to the computer or electronics device even if there is a sudden power drop or power-up.
Types of UPS and their functions
There are 3 types of UPS. These are:
Offline/ Standby UPS
Online UPS
Line-interactive UPS
Offline/ Standby UPS
Out of these three, this is the most basic type of UPS. In this UPS, the load in the main system is directly connected to the input power. When the main power supply fails to connect, it provides power backup.
It provides basic battery backup and light search protection. These are inexpensive and cost-effective items for non-critical, small or stand alone applications like PCs and others. It’s reliable and so easy to use. UPSs overall effectiveness is 55%. There is 10-15 millisecond of power break during every main failure and resumption.
Uses- Home computers, Printers, Scanners etc
Online UPS
This one is default from the offline standby as the DC and AC converter is always connected. This means there will be no transfer time between the main power source and the battery. It provides a great protection source against spikes, electrical noise, and complete power failure.
By using online UPS, you will get the highest level of power protection, conditioning, and backup. It ensures zero switchover time during mains outages. It provides completely regenerated output power. It was rated 100% overall effectiveness by sources.
Uses - Data Center, Intensive Care Unit
Line-interactive UPS
It has the similar types of design that of Offline UPS but with the properties of an online double conversion. These are very high effective conditioning power backup systems.
Its setups are suitable for application areas where power outages are rare but you will get frequent voltage fluctuations. It will accept a high range of voltage variation. With high efficiency, its overall effectiveness is 85%. It’s single power converter does the function of converting AC to DC and DC to AC.
Uses - Departmental servers, Small Homes. Small businesses, and medium enterprises
