What is H.264?
H.264, also known as Advanced Video Coding (AVC), is a widely used video compression standard developed by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group.
It is designed to achieve high-quality video compression while minimizing the amount of data needed to store and transmit the video. H.264 uses advanced compression techniques, such as variable block sizes, motion estimation, and entropy encoding to compress video files to smaller sizes without sacrificing image quality. This makes it well-suited for use in video conferencing, streaming video, and other applications where high-quality video is required but bandwidth is limited. H.264 is supported by most modern devices and software, including web browsers, smartphones, and video conferencing applications. It is often used in conjunction with other audio and video codecs, such as AAC for audio compression, to provide a complete video streaming solution. While H.264 is widely used and supported, it has since been surpassed in efficiency by newer video compression standards such as H.265 (HEVC) and AV1. Nonetheless, H.264 remains a popular and widely used standard, particularly for streaming video over the internet.
