Optical Zoom

What is Optical Zoom?

Optical zoom is a camera feature that allows the photographer to change the focal length of the lens, resulting in a magnified or zoomed-in view of the subject.

Unlike digital zoom, which simply crops and enlarges a portion of the image, optical zoom physically moves the lens elements to adjust the focal length and magnify the image. Optical zoom is typically measured as a ratio, such as 2x or 10x, which represents the maximum magnification that can be achieved. For example, a 2x optical zoom would double the focal length of the lens and magnify the image by a factor of two. Optical zoom is a powerful tool for photographers who want to capture distant or small subjects with detail and clarity. It allows the photographer to zoom in and capture details that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye. Overall, optical zoom is a valuable feature that can greatly enhance the capabilities of a camera, particularly for those who want to capture images of distant or small subjects.
