What is RS-232?
RS-232 is a standard for serial communication transmission of data between two devices, such as a computer and a peripheral device.
It defines the physical interface and protocol used for data transfer over a serial cable. RS-232 defines the voltage levels, signal timing, and data format for transmitting data over a serial connection. The standard specifies a single-ended interface with a maximum cable length of 15 meters and a maximum data transfer rate of 20 kbps. RS-232 was widely used in early computer systems to connect peripheral devices such as modems, printers, and keyboards. However, as technology has advanced, newer standards such as USB and Ethernet have largely replaced RS-232 for most applications. Despite being an older standard, RS-232 is still used in some applications, particularly in industrial and scientific settings, where it is often used to connect to legacy devices or specialized equipment that requires serial communication.
