Sound Pressure Level (SPL)

What is Sound Pressure Level (SPL)?

Sound Pressure Level (SPL) is a measure of the intensity of sound, expressed in decibels (dB).

It refers to the amount of acoustic energy present in a sound wave and the amplitude of the sound wave. SPL is commonly used to measure the loudness of sounds, such as music, speech, or noise. The human ear can detect sounds with SPLs ranging from 0 dB (the threshold of hearing) to 140 dB (the threshold of pain), with louder sounds causing potential hearing damage or loss. SPL is an important consideration when evaluating audio equipment such as microphones, speakers, and headphones.
